'The Other Women' – Same but different!
I would expect almost 75% of people who read this article, in the first two weeks of posting it, would have some preconceived notion of who I am. For those of you unaware I am the National Poker Manager for the 888Poker League and as such I have a very different relationship with the Mistress than most other contributors on this site.
My initial involvement in poker was as a player and luckily enough I fell into a role within the poker industry and now find myself in charge of a rapidly growing and innovative league that occupies a lot of my time. Over the years my relationship with the Mistress has developed, evolved, changed and tested me more than anything else in my life (yes I am single and have no children) but overall my life still remains dedicated to the Mistress; just in a very different way to what you would expect!
In 2003 my brother introduced to me an online card game called No limit Hold ‘em; that very first night, by the dim flickering light of a computer screen (and playing free money SNG’s) I met the Mistress and had my very first dalliance, and from there it was Love (lust might be more adequate but I am trying to keep my first post very PG).
Over the coming years I studied and played with my overreaching goal to be the best poker player Australia had ever produced! I even started working in the industry hoping that this would improve my skills at reading players. Well that move turned out to be the best thing I had ever done in my life, that role in that little (terribly operated and quite piss poor) poker company led to a state manager role in South Australia that led to a move back to Victoria and eventually taking on a National Operations role with the 888PL.
In 2008 my life was all about poker; playing online at night and grinding for a solid 6 – 8 hours, then running a poker league from 8am – 6pm. Sleep was hard to come by, but it was all worth it as I strongly believe this was the year that I was at my peak in terms of performance and skills. Towards the end of 2008, in August, I decided to lay some cash down, and thanks to some staking from 888PL, was able to participate in my first live large buy in tournaments during the Crown Victorian Championships. I played two events, the $550 repechage and the $2700 Main Event; I final tabled both events finishing 4th in the repechage and 10th in the Main event for a combined total of just over $30,000.
That was the last campaign I had a serious tilt at and after that actively playing poker took a back seat as my professional life took over and the 888PL became the number one priority in my life. Whilst I don’t want these articles to be about 888PL, there will be at time references to it, I need you all to know that this is the driving passion in my life, to provide decent, ethical tournaments via a league of integrity driven by professional and passionate people. So know I still love poker, but I love, even more, to deliver poker to the masses; to assist introducing new players to the warm embrace of the Mistress!
Whilst most of the guys contributing on here will be talking about poker and imparting their teachings and thoughts on poker I thought I might head another direction and let everyone in on my life. I will be recounting stories from my life, discussing how I am actively trying to seek a happy work/life balance (something severely lacking in my life) and all the adventures I get up to when I’m not working.
